Usually one dons a shirt with a celebrity’s face on it in order to honor said celebrity. But what about those celebs who, instead, prefer to plaster their own mugs across their chests? Is it all blazing hubris? Or is something seriously meta or zen or various and sundry other words for “deep” going on here?
Check out some of the most recent instances of face-flaunting below — and stare into the swirling abyss that is this baffling trend:
1). Nic Cage
Recently, Cage joined Andrew Dice Clay backstage at a Guns N’ Roses concert, and since that sentence wasn’t surreal enough already he wore this T-shirt featuring a meme-i-fied image of his own face. [Insert “Face Off” joke here.]
2). Macaulay Culkin

Look at this photo of the Pizza Underground mastermind wearing a T-shirt featuring a photo of Ryan Gosling wearing a T-shirt featuring a photo of the Pizza Underground mastermind. My brain just melted like cheese on a slice, guys.
3). Ryan Gosling
This is obviously a fevered dream, but imagine we took this whole T-shirt within a T-shirt thing even further. My brain just melted like cheese on a slice and in the crust of the slice and slathered all over a slice on top of a slice.
4). Brad Pitt
Look at Brad Pitt’s adorable T-shirt, featuring what appears to be a drawing of him and Angelina Jolie rendered by his kids. What a stellar dad. I’m still waiting for my mom to bust out all that macaroni jewelry I made for her last week — er, I mean, when I was a kid.
5). James Franco
Franco took the selfie game to new levels when he wore his parody of the Kanye West/Kim Kardashian Vogue cover on his sleeve.
6). And James Franco
And he took it even further with this gorgeous Franco-fied smock.
